Tyler Skolozynski is an 18-year-old artist living in Angier, North Carolina. In May of 2023, she graduated high school and also Central Carolina Community College with an associate degree in arts. She is now working on a bachelor’s degree in fine arts at Campbell University (class of 2025). Tyler plans to get a master’s degree in fine arts in Europe, and pursue an art career.

Tyler’s love of art started at a young age, but her love for art and creative skills have taken off in the last three years. She studies art under her mom, Julie Niskanen Skolozynski, a professional artist. Tyler also teaches art classes in Julie’s art studio – Rooster’s Crow Studio in Angier. Tyler hopes to open her own studio in the future, where she will create and teach art.

Tyler is the eldest of six children, so being a big sister and spending time with family is an important part of her life. Her experiences with family travel and hiking in the mountains have enhanced her appreciation for nature and God’s creation. Her faith plays a major role in her education and art journey.

Artist Statement

I want my art to glorify God and give the viewer a sense of beauty and a new way to look at things. By depicting scenes of storms or still moments in nature, I want my art to reflect God’s magnificence.

My favorite subjects are landscapes, storms, and buildings. Many feel afraid or alone during storms, but there is so much amazing power in the sky. I love to show beauty in the mystery of nature but also in the formality of buildings. Both have qualities I like to highlight. When painting an image with a single building or a single tree, I love the sense of the solitude. I enjoy the freedom of painting a landscape, but also enjoy the rules of perspective and proportion when painting buildings.

When the viewer looks at one of my landscape paintings, I hope to spark a sense of beauty and the sublime. In the busyness of life, people often miss out on quiet, still moments. I hope my paintings can inspire those quiet moments and help connect the viewer with their Creator.

Gouache is my preferred painting medium. I love the paint’s versatility and finish. The opaque, yet watercolor qualities of gouache work well with my style and the images I use. Working in detail is important to me and I have found gouache to be the best medium for this. When not using gouache, I like to work with acrylics and watercolor.
